Addition Laws in Introductory Physics

چکیده

We propose a unified approach to addition of some physical quantities (among which resistors and capacitors are the most well-known) that are usually encountered in introductory physics such that the formulæ required to solve problems are always simply additive. This approach has the advantage of being consistent with the intuition of students. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we propose and solve several problems. We hope that this article can serve as a resource paper for problems on the subject.

How to teach statistical thermal physics in the introductory physics course

The laws of thermodynamics were formulated long before we knew the existence of atoms and molecules. The formal thermodynamics curriculum based on the empirical laws have been replaced by courses based on physical and statistical foundation of the subject in the intermediate courses in undergraduate curriculum for some time now. In these courses they show how the properties of macroscopic syste...

فیزیک کاربردی-1: مقدمه‌ای بر فیزیک اعصاب

In recent years, many physics departments have turned from pure physics into applied physics so that physics is no longer taught as a major in undergraduate or graduate studies without any specific application. This is due to the physics solutions brought for researchers in different disciplines, and that is for the analytical skills of physicists. From the first differential equation developed...

The Introductory Essay: Richard Wright's Covert Challenging of Jim Crowism and Uncle Tomism

Richard Wright’s introductory essay to his collection of short stories Uncle Tom's Children describes hidden forms of resistance against Jim Crowism and Uncle Tomism. The essay entitled The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch relates Wright’s daily confrontations with Jim Crowism with a particular emphasis on his evasive actions, and his covert activities, such as silence, pla...

A unit on oscillations, determinism and chaos for introductory physics students

This article describes a unit on oscillations, determinism and chaos developed for calculus-based introductory physics students as part of the laboratory-centered Workshop Physics curriculum. Students begin by observing the motion of a simple pendulum with a paper clip bob with and without magnets in its vicinity. This observation provides an introduction to the contrasting concepts of Laplacia...

Understanding Student Answers In Introductory Physics Courses

Many assigned problems in introductory physics courses require the student to formulate a system of algebraic equations that describe a physical situation. An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) designed to help must be able to identify which physical quantity each student variable represents, and which fundamental laws each of her equations incorporates. Many ITS’s predefine the variables ([4,2]...
